What inspires me

My background is in embroidery and as well as stitch I use a variety of methods and materials. Cyanotype and eco-print are different ways to capture something immediate in my natural surroundings. Cyanotype is a photographic process that allows me to record an image on a surface. Eco-print is a textile process that uses the natural pigments in plant material to leave a mark on cloth.

I am inspired by walks in the local landscape, by my own physical presence in nature and by a desperation to capture this in material form.

Making in the Midlands

I was only based in the Midlands for a short period but in fact it was a very important period for me, setting up and starting out as a maker. The support and knowledge I gained through the Next Move scheme, the Crafts Council and Coventry University was brilliant. I learnt so much about setting up a craft studio and practice both through training and my own trial and error.

What has changed most about the crafts in the last thirty years

I think that craft has become much more widespread and there is less distinction between high-end craft as an artform and what home 'crafters' do. Many people now run small craft businesses selling things in a highly professional manner. Advances in technology including the world wide web and social media have made this possible. The world of marketing and presenting work to an audience is more open than ever before but perhaps more complex.
