The year 2002 marked the fifth edition in the Made in the Middle series and a significant change in the curatorial approach. Although still an open exhibition selected by a panel, this was the first time there was a curated theme: an exploration of place for craft within the home.
Craft shown in a gallery context of white walls and empty space is not always seen as compatible with a home environment. At this time television programmes had raised awareness and appreciation of contemporary design and generated interest in the possibilities and ways of changing interior styles. This exhibition chose to present work in room settings, so visitors could envisage craft in their home.
Made in the Middle 2002 was also the first time there was a focus on one discipline, this year it was glass. The exhibition demonstrated crafts contribution other industries including commercial design, highlighting the work of Joanne Mitchell and Nicola Schellander at Edinburgh Crystal. This edition of Made in the Middle was also the first to feature the results of an action research project as part of its development. You can find out about this project in the Resources section of this website At Home 2002, along with the opportunity to view the catalogue of this exhibition Catalogues.
The 2002 exhibition was selected by Rosie Addenbrooke, Exhibitions Officer, the Herbert Museum & Art Gallery, Coventry; Loretta Braganza, ceramicist; Jo Davis, The Qube Gallery, Oswestry; Simon Fraser, jeweller and curator; Jackie Lee, Crafts Officer, West Midlands Arts and Miranda Leonard, Director of Brewery Arts. It was curated by Andy Horn, Craftspace and Nicki Gardner, Bilston Craft Gallery.
