Timeline
Made in the Middle 1995
Made in the Middle 1995 toured to seven regional galleries; showing over a period of thirteen months in its entirety. This third in the series showcased fifty selected exhibitors whose work reflected the strength of crafts practice in the West Midlands. Ceramics and textiles were particularly well represented with further entries in wood, furniture, metalwork and calligraphy.
This exhibition showed that it would be wrong to think of craftspeople as nostalgic conservationists. Like nature itself, its landscape and species, their work mutates, adapting to new conditions.
1995 was the first time Made in the Middle had an accompanying catalogue. You can see this catalogue in the Resources section of this website: Catalogues
The 1995 exhibition was selected by Martina Margetts, critic, lecturer and curator; Philip Eglin, ceramicist; John Rhodes, County Arts Officer, Staffordshire and Anne Beddow, international buyer. It was curated by Louise Taylor.
